The XTOOL D5S is an entry-level diagnostic tablet designed for DIYers and home mechanics who need more than a basic code reader. In our testing, this OBD2 scanner impressed us with its ability to perform 16 common service resets, including essential functions like electronic parking brake release and throttle body relearn. Unlike cheaper handheld units, the D5S provides full system diagnostics, covering engine, ABS, SRS, and transmission modules, which is a major step up for those tackling intermittent warning lights at home. The inclusion of CAN FD and FCA protocols ensures it remains relevant for newer vehicle architectures that many older scanners cannot access. We found the interface to be responsive and the live data graphing clear enough for basic troubleshooting. It strikes a solid balance between price and capability, making it an excellent bridge between a simple code reader and a professional-grade shop tool. However, it is important to note that while it supports bi-directional control for some systems, it is not a full-featured professional scan tool. Users with complex, proprietary manufacturer-specific issues on high-end luxury vehicles may find its depth slightly limited compared to expensive dealer-level diagnostic equipment. For the average car owner, though, it offers an incredible amount of utility for the price point, especially with the inclusion of lifetime free software updates that keep the vehicle database current.
